We definitely need a better DH icon
brb, have a meeting at 1 :simple_smile:
cool, hi/bye!
So edsu had the idea to open this from just DH devs to DH in general, which I think makes sense given that we can break off into channels for DH subtopics
Right now I see new signups on the Google Form’s spreadsheet and manually add them myself. Wondering about automating a way for anyone who already has an invite to see people requesting invites & invite them (limiting this to DH devs was mostly to limit time spent creating invites)
Might as well rename this the UMD DH slack :simple_smile:
haha yeah :smile: i’ve had a couple non-umd people ask for invites already, though!
:-)
Could someone tell me whether they have a link to invite people in their sidebar?
as for distributing the invite process, I think I saw something like that for a museum-tech slack I used to be in - I’ll see if I can’t track it down
(If that’s the case, I can try to make the Google signup form send email addresses of people who want to be invited to an invite channel here)
nope, no invite link here
Cool! I’ll set this up
Ok let me know if you have any trouble with it ; I think there may be some trick to figuring out the channel code
hello :simple_smile:
hi!
woohoo! Thanks @paregorios :simple_smile: and welcome
happy to be here; my thanks to @literature_geek for the invitation and initiative
no shame in being a DH Cat, @paregorios
@captain.primate!
@paregorios: you’re very welcome!
@paregorios!
the most pressing question is whether giphy integration has been enabled
This, @captain.primate, is why DH never gets anything done
damn right, @mdlincoln
hey @porterolsen !
yesss

This popped up in my feed today: sentiment analysis being no better than a coin flip: https://relativeinsight.com/zurich-university-sentiment-analysis-is-a-statistical-flip-of-a-coin/ (@edsu this might be useful to show ppl in response to questions about Twitter analytics)
so, what’s the story on spreading the word, etc.? Just go crazy?
yes! i’m working right now on automating signups (currently i have to manually invite email addresses that people submit through the google form), so after that’s set up registration time will speed up. please do spread the word!
i’ve been off slack for a few months and don’t remember if permissions allow this—but i’ll try to make it so everyone can create channels and invite others.
ok
FWIW I was able to create a channel
@paregorios: thanks, that is good to know
Okay, the Slack signup form (http://goo.gl/8HwLSQ) now automatically sends you an invitation. We’ll have to watch for spam—let me know if you see any problems/reason to return to manual invitations.

hey, its @mcburton!
:+1:
one of these days I’ll sit down and read the Slack documentation
HI @captain.primate !!
:wave:
@literature_geek: what did you do to make the google form auto signup?
@mcburton: @edsu pointed me to https://github.com/dherbst/slack-invite-script
GAS is pretty sweet
I wish it had a package/library management system
Yeah!
@dhmemebot: help
@mcburton: (still building that bot)
@literature_geek: dare I ask what @dhmemebot will do?
@mdlincoln: i was going to start with a pool of DHy memes/GIFs and have it serve up a random one when called (e.g. from the DH GIF twitter contest chnm did a few years ago: https://storify.com/kimisgold/digitalhumanities-gif)
@mdlincoln: it may also have some opinions on common DH phrases
@literature_geek: I could also imagine it working from the quotes in http://whatisdigitalhumanities.com/
heh, I remember that contest well
yeah! slackbot’s on that too:
what is the digital humanities
Check out over 800+ definitions for “digital humanities” provided by digital humanists at http://whatisdigitalhumanities.com
@mdlincoln: i like the idea to pull individual ones into the stream, we should add that
@literature_geek: or import them into slack’s loading message
@mdlincoln: cool, i didn’t know you could do that!
@literature_geek: You can add them one by one in the slack settings, but I imagine there could be some way to do a bulk import
/giphy hello

/giphy good morning
soooooo what’s the point of the slack app on laptop/desktop? At first glance it’s indistinguishable from the browser (chrome) experience on OSX.
avoiding pinging everyone on the channel…
@paregorios: I think if you belong to multiple slag organizations, it can be a bit easier to switch between them on the desktop app
I’ve always meant to look into the slack/irc integration - bit of a pain to go between different slack organisations
hmm, I’ve got a down arrow next to the channel name and it facilitates switching. Affordance is exactly the same afaics across both app and browser
@fmcc: I got two sentences into the page on slack/irc integration and backpedaled … my rabbithole alarm went off
@paregorios: aye, that’s why it’s in the “always meant to look at that” list - I’ve happily avoided rabbit holes for oh, months now.
anyone here doing work in modeling music? I’ve a colleague who’s producing some compositional grammars, and has an interactive tool live today: http://www.musicmachine.io/
I know @raffazizzi here at MITH does work modeling music
I like it because it’s easy to switch between different teams, which I don’t think you can do with the web browser.
@mwidner: that down-arrow next to the channel name in the browser view does it for me
ah, well good to know!
:simple_smile:
waves
/giphy waves
@mdlincoln: That looks really cool! Who’s working on that? Is it someone at UMD?
@raffazizzi: he’s actually a UMD alum from the music department - the musicmachine is a starter example of what he is trying to do with this JS counterpoint package: https://github.com/jrleszcz/counterpoint
he’s also employable if there are any interesting projects in the pipeline :stuck_out_tongue:
cool! There’s a Digital Dialog coming up at MITH by Richard Freedman - I think he might find it very interesting. Do you want to tell him to come by? :simple_smile: http://mith.umd.edu/?post_type=podcast&p=14797
done :simple_smile:
/giphy yay!

Oh, burn!
there goes the neighborhood…. @galarzaalex is here
it’s a barrio now

Of all the things I thought I’d be doing today, disagreeing with Cookie Monster was not one of them.
so is this the start of the great DH twitter migration?
/giphy maybe?
Hot damn!
Just posted this in #data-sharing if anyone has any contributions: https://digitalhumanities.slack.com/archives/data-sharing/p1445027721000004

Anyone have any good examples of metadata schemes being published/curated/shared on GitHub?
I’d love to know this ^ too.
So far, we’ve got ontologies/vocabularies on Github (American numismatical association, British museum, Open Context), but not metadata schemes, per se
Here’s one example: the Blue Mountain Project puts everything on Github, including MODS/METS and RELAXNG schema. https://github.com/pulibrary/BlueMountain/tree/master/metadata/schemas
Pretty cool slack :thumbsup:
Haha hey @stefan hey @wordnik
:slack:
hi @tullyhansen! thanks for the heads-up :simple_smile:
Hey, just made #off-topic happen, hope that’s okay… other Slacks of my acquaintance have benefitted from a DMZ for random conversation to take place in without clogging up ‘proper’ channels.
Oh @literature_geek, just saw that you’d already archived #random, haha! Feel free to get rid of #off-topic too, but +1 from me to a place for ‘non-work-related flimflam, faffing, hodge-podge or jibber-jabber’ :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Thanks for putting this together, @literature_geek! It will be interesting to see how this compares to Twitter.
Any other music DH folks join here yet?
@abrennr: sup
@scott_bot: sup
@mcburton Where am I? Who are you people? Is this the DH promised land?
@scott_bot: We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams
@mcburton Y’all look like a bunch of slackers to me.
@wordnik @tullyhansen :wave:
I think we’ll see a lot of familiar faces in all three Slack groups.

hi!
greetings from East Lansing, where it is currently /giphy #weather 48824
damn, guess the giphy integration isnt up and running yet
@mia: hi!
@thomaspadilla: huh, judging by the number of GIFs that @captain.primate has posted, I thought it was working “fine”
hmmmm
lets see

Wait…what…East Lansing is Rohan?
When your morning is wasted on unix flag hell https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/tar.png
That said, if any of you all haven’t used https://stedolan.github.io/jq/ yet, you should! It is a miracle-worker for manipulating big JSON files
@mdlincoln: Very cool, thanks!
A+ for JQ. I’ve also used the very similar NPM package “json” for situations where it’s better/easier to use only npm dependencies.

So happy to see that slash-giphy is a critical part of this channel. /giphy happy dance

Ah, never knew it had to be the first thing on the line.
/giphy eureka
:confused:
Carlton makes it all worthwhile.
the giphy geist is a strange and curious beast
:thumbsup:
Hey everyone :wave:
I already mentioned a site I’m working on over in the #bots channel, but I noticed not many people are in it. What would be the best way to talk about http://botwiki.org without it being considered spam?
@tullyhansen: #off-topic is a good idea! i got rid of#random because i wasn’t sure how we’d use it differently from general, but i could see using general for non-randomness (announcements for everyone, stuff related to the DH Slack)
fwiw, I think sending up a flare every once in awhile re: stuff in other channels would be useful
@literature_geek: Here’s a “quick trick” how to create an #announcement channel https://twitter.com/fourtonfish/status/655615168030838784 (If you’re interested.)
@stefan: that’s a good idea!i could set that up and then also default new users to #off-topic so they have a place to say hello
@literature_geek: One slack I’m in has an Introductions channel that everyone’s asked to join.
@triplingual: great idea, i’ve added that
Hi, all! A few changes: #general has changed to #announcements and will now just be used for admin announcements like this. #introductions is to say hello, introduce yourself, and periodically invite people to join other channels. #off-topic is for anything (random chatter, GIFs, etc.) All new users will automatically be signed up for #announcements, #introductions, and #off-topic.
2015-10-20
I’ve given the admin role to a random selection of users who I know aren’t bots, so there should be people besides me who can moderate members/channels if that’s ever an issue. Happy to hear any ideas for a better way of allowing communal moderation than this.

I created the #meta channel for discussions about the DH Slack (stuff like channel building, the DH Slack community, and other meta/admin discussions).
